Oh sunny day!
I think there is an impact on the student's attitudes with the fluorescent lights off. I like to keep the blinds open and let the outside light flood the room.
Today was a new lesson for 4th and 3rd Grade. We discussed what an endangered animal is and who some of those animals are. Then we looked at the series that Andy Warhol did on endangered animals. The students were asked to make a simple line drawing of a animal that I had posted on the black board in the back of the room. I gave them an illustration of 13 different animals. I am going to take these drawings and make copies so that the have 4 of the same drawing. We are going to color these using warm and cool colors and apply them to black paper. They were really discouraged about just drawing something by looking at it. There were a lot of, "Ms.Irvin, I can't do this!". I told them it takes a lot of practice to be really great at something, and that I was there to assist in every way possible, but they HAD TO TRY! We broke down the animals into the simple shapes that they were made of, and built the form up. Every student ended up with a very unique animal, and I was quite impressed!

1st Year Art Teacher
"Teachers who inspire know that teaching is like cultivating a garden, and those who would have nothing to do with thorns must never attempt to gather flowers".
I am a first year art teacher. I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in December 2008. I was extremely lucky in finding a job immediately after graduation. I am a temporary teacher at a Elementary school in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Although I will only be here till the end of March, the experience thus far has been well worth it.
This blog will allow you to see the rewards and trials I go through in my first year of teaching. I would like to share these experiences in hopes of receiving advice and also giving future art educators an insight into what lies ahead. Please comment on anything and everything! Positive criticism is always appreciated!
This is my 6th week. I am teaching 3rd-6th grade. Each class is 50 minutes long. I see a total of 376 children throughout the week. Each class comes to art once a week. There is a dress code at this school, which I really can see the positive influence it has on the school body. My classroom is next to the music room and in the 4th grade hallway.
Very soon I will tell you about the past six week's lessons and trials...
